Hybrid Fabrics: Multi-Fiber Medical Textile Construction
Hybrid fabricsโฏinclude more than one type of structural fiber in its construction.โฏ Hybrid fabricsโฏallow two or more fibers to be constructed intoโฏone or more layers of fabric. In a woven hybridย fabricย it is possibleโฏto have one fiber running in the weft (crosswise)โฏdirection and the second fiber running in the warp (longitudinal) direction.โฏ It is also possible to use a combination of different fiber types in each warp and weft direction.ย
Although hybrids areย most commonly foundย inโฏknit fabrics, the principle is also used in weaving, braiding, and non-woven fabrics.โฏ Hybrids are often used for:ย
- Surgical meshesย
- Scaffoldsย
- Surgical graftsย
- Wound dressingsย
Typical hybrid combinations include:ย
- Polypropylene/Polyglycolic acid (PGA)ย
- Polypropylene/Polylactic acid (PLA)ย
- Polyester/Nitinolย
